Frequently Asked Questions
The Type of Night Guard varies depending on the Use Purpose. There are devices to protect the teeth from grinding, splints used for TMJ Symptoms, and a Sports Night Guard that protects the teeth and mouth during exercise. After checking the Use Purpose and oral Status, we will guide you to a suitable device.
Occlusal devices used for bruxism and the occlusal stabilizers used for TMJ symptoms may look similar, but their fabrication purpose and adjustment methods differ based on diagnosis. If you have TMJ pain or discomfort, we first assess the condition and then guide you on the type of device and treatment plan.
Occlusal devices can help reduce the stress and wear on teeth, but they do not completely eliminate teeth grinding itself. Management methods are provided according to symptoms and oral condition.
Just because there is TMJ pain or discomfort when opening the mouth does not mean that treatment is done with the same device in all cases. After Confirmation of the Cause of the Symptoms and the TMJ Status, an Assessment is made of whether a splint is needed, and the treatment Procedure and Cost may vary depending on the Diagnosis.
A Sports Night Guard is a device used to protect the teeth and oral cavity from impact during exercise. The appropriate type can be selected based on the sport type and level of impact.
The two devices are different in Use Purpose and required function. Sports Night Guard is a device to protect teeth and the oral cavity from impact during exercise, and the grinding Night Guard is Used to reduce the burden on teeth caused by grinding and clenching during sleep. Because Material, Thickness, and shape are different, we recommend fabricating each device matching the intended Use.
Off-the-shelf devices may not fit the individual's teeth and oral shape accurately, which can cause them to come off easily or be uncomfortable when worn. At New York Yonsei Dental Clinic, we check the oral shape and take an impression to fabricate a device customized for the individual.
First, after confirming the Use Purpose and the Status of the teeth and oral cavity, we take an impression of the teeth with impression material. Based on the taken impression, a device matching the individual’s oral shape is fabricated. After completion, you Directly wear it to check the fit and we adjust the necessary parts.
In general, visits are required for consultation and oral Status Confirmation, impressions, and wear Confirmation and adjustment of the completed device. Thereafter, Progress can be checked regularly depending on the Type of device and usage Status.
Production time varies depending on the type of device.
· Occlusal Splint: hard type about 5~7 days, soft type about 2~3 days
· Sports Night Guard: soft type about 1 day, hard type about 5 days
The above period is a typical production time, and it may change depending on production circumstances.
The completed device is first tried on directly to check if it fits well in the mouth. After necessary adjustments, it is delivered to you, and the usage method, cleaning, and storage methods are also guided together.
A foreign-body sensation may be felt when first worn. We try on the completed appliance and Confirmation whether it fits, and adjust When Necessary. If discomfort persists, checking the appliance Status is recommended.
After Use, please wash the device clean, dry the moisture thoroughly, and store it in its dedicated case. Immersing it in hot water or boiling it may deform the shape of the device, so it is advisable to avoid this. Specific cleaning Procedures are provided as a Guide according to the Material of the device.
If the device becomes loose or cracked, please do not continue using it and contact the dental office. If the device does not fit properly in the mouth or is damaged, it may affect its protective function and comfort, so after checking its condition, adjustment or remaking may be necessary.
The usage period varies depending on the type of device, degree of wear, and oral condition. If the device is deformed or damaged, we check the condition and guide you on whether adjustment or replacement is needed.
